5 Expert Art Tricks You Can Try Today

Whether you've been sketching for years or you just picked up a paintbrush last week this one's for you. Sometimes all it takes is one small trick to completely change the way you create.
Here are five expert approved techniques that artists swear by, broken down in the simplest way possible. Trust us, your sketchbook is about to look very different.
1. The "Ghost Line" Technique for Confident Sketching
Ever notice how beginners press super hard with their pencil and end up with dark, scratchy lines that are impossible to fix? Here's what the pros do instead: they sketch light first, dark later.
Start by drawing very lightly almost like you're barely touching the paper. These are your "ghost lines." They help you feel out the composition without committing. Once you're happy with the placement, go in with confident, darker strokes on top. The ghost lines almost disappear underneath, and what you're left with is a clean, intentional drawing.
Try it today: Sketch a simple object from your desk a mug, a plant, your sneaker. Ghost lines first, bold lines second. Feel the difference!

2. The Colour Palette Trick That Changes Everything
One of the most common beginner mistakes? Using too many colours at once. Art teachers will tell you this over and over, fewer colours = stronger artwork.
Pick just 3 colours for your next painting or illustration. A shadow colour, a midtone, and a highlight. That's it. When you limit yourself, you're forced to mix, layer, and get creative and the result almost always looks more cohesive and intentional than a rainbow explosion.
Bonus tip: Try using one warm and one cool colour in your palette. The contrast between warm and cool tones creates natural depth and visual interest even in the simplest paintings.
Try it today: Grab any 3 colours from your kit and paint a small colour study even just shapes
or swatches. Notice how they interact!

3. The "Upside Down" Drawing Method
This one sounds a little wild, but it actually works. When we look at something familiar a face,
a hand, a chair our brain fills in what it thinks it sees instead of what's actually there. That's why drawings can look "off" even when you're trying hard.
The fix? Flip your reference image upside down and draw it that way. Your brain stops recognizing it as a "face" or "hand" and starts seeing it as just shapes, lines, and angles. The result is often a much more accurate drawing because you're truly looking rather than assuming.
Try it today: Find a photo on your phone, flip it upside down, and try sketching what you see.
You'll be surprised at the result!

4. Dry Brushing for Texture Magic
This one is a painting favourite. Dry brushing is exactly what it sounds like you use a brush
that has very little paint on it (almost dry) and drag it lightly across your canvas or paper. The
result is a beautiful, rough, textured stroke that you simply cannot get with a fully loaded brush.
It's perfect for:
Hair and fur
Grass and foliage
Wood grain and rough surfaces
Aged or weathered textures
Load your brush with a little paint, then dab most of it off on a paper towel. Then lightly drag the brush across your surface. Magic!
Try it today: On a scrap piece of paper, practice dry brush strokes in different directions.
Experiment with how much paint you leave on the brush and see the range of textures you can create.

5. The Squint Test: Your Built In Editing Tool
Here's one that professional artists use constantly and it costs absolutely nothing. When
you're working on a piece, step back and squint at it.
Squinting blurs out the details and lets you see the big picture: the overall composition, the
balance of light and dark, the flow of the piece. If something looks "off" when squinted at, it's usually a value problem meaning your lights and darks aren't balanced properly.
This works for drawing and painting. It's basically a free editing tool built right into your own
eyes.
Try it today: Next time you're working on something, stop halfway through, step back, and squint. Ask yourself : where does my eye go first? Is anything too bright or too dark? What would change?
Final Thoughts
You don't need expensive supplies or years of training to level up your art. Sometimes it's just about learning to see differently and working smarter, not harder. Try even one of these tricks today and let your creativity surprise you.
